Watching these stages come together each year, from the first sketch to the framed final piece, is one of the genuine privileges of our work.

There is always much anticipation amongst the ARTSHOP team when we first get a sense of what award-winning jeweller Keelie Skou has created for the Balloon Pop — one of the Gala’s most anticipated philanthropic moments. This year’s piece,

came together — the design thinking behind the jewellery, the discipline behind the illustration she completed once the piece itself was finished, and what it has meant for us, on the framing side, to be entrusted with the work each year. What follows is the story as she generously told it to us, woven with our own perspective on receiving and preserving her work.

We always ask Keelie where a new piece begins, and this year the brief came from the Gala itself. “The theme for the 2026 LifeFlight Gala was ‘Mirror Ball’,” Keelie told us, “and from the very beginning, we wanted to create a piece that reflected the theme beautifully while remaining timeless and wearable.” The name

            — which translates from French to English as “moonflower” or “flower of the moon,” a nocturnal bloom that opens only at night — guided the aesthetic. “The name evokes elegance and softness, while also tying back to the moon’s natural ability to reflect light,” she explained.

What struck us most was how much intention sat behind the spaces between the diamonds, not just the stones themselves. “A key focus within the design was ensuring that not only the diamonds sparkled, but that every element of negative space felt considered,” Keelie explained. “The spacing between the marquise diamonds subtly forms delicate four‑pointed star shapes, creating hidden moments of symbolism within the piece.” That celestial thread continues on the reverse, where a star motif adds, in her words, a sense of sophistication.

The gemstones and metals carried the same level of intention. “We wanted to create a piece that felt feminine, elegant, and highly-wearable without overtly resembling a disco ball,” Keelie told us. “Every element was thoughtfully considered throughout the design process.” Marquise diamonds sit at the centre of that intention, creating what she describes as delicate faceted moonflower floral motifs that continue throughout the pendant, reflecting and dispersing light from every angle. A pear‑cut diamond crowns the bale, with marquise, round brilliant and oval diamonds completing the composition: 1.56ct of natural white diamonds in total.

The piece is crafted in 18k white gold, chosen, Keelie says, to enhance brilliance and ensure longevity. “By combining timeless natural diamonds with a precious metal of enduring quality, the intention was to create not only a statement piece for the evening, but a future heirloom” — a sentiment that resonates strongly with us at ARTSHOP, as the piece then moves from jewel to illustration, and finally into the frame we design and build to preserve this moment in time for its future custodians.

Behind the elegance lies a highly technical process, and Keelie was candid about how exacting this needs to be. “With high‑end bespoke jewellery, no stage of the process from the initial concept through to the final polish can ever be overlooked.”

design demanded close attention because of its “intricate balance of negative space, diamond placement, and multi-directional light performance” — even the smallest variation would have affected the symmetry and flow of the piece. Maintaining structural integrity while preserving delicacy also required careful engineering.

It’s a piece that took a full team at Hogan’s to bring to life. Keelie began with the initial design and sketch, which Nolan translated into CAD files; Tim then undertook the manufacturing and assembly, Leo set each diamond meticulously, and Tim completed the final polish.

That’s the point at which our part of the story begins. Once the jewel was complete, Keelie turned to the bespoke illustration that would eventually come to us at ARTSHOP.

The illustration: discipline, storytelling and artisan detail

“Jewellery illustration is a meticulous process,” Keelie told us, “particularly when the intention is to accurately represent a finished bespoke piece in terms of scale, proportion, colour, and gemstone detail.” She prefers to wait until the jewellery itself is finished before she begins, which she says enables “accuracy in capturing the final form, light performance, and intricate detailing as it exists”, and the chance to observe how the design truly comes to life once crafted.

For Keelie, the illustration is never just a record of what was made. “It becomes more than documentation,” she told us. “It is a visual storytelling process that honours the craftsmanship, emotion, and individuality embedded within the piece.” It’s precisely why ARTSHOP treats the framing of her work with the same level of care she brings to creating it, because a piece built with that much intention deserves a presentation to match, which is where our own work begins.

Conservation framing: preserving the heirloom’s aesthetic for generations

Once Keelie’s illustration is complete, it becomes our job at ARTSHOP to preserve and present it through conservation‑grade framing — and we feel that responsibility deeply. As ARTSHOP’s owner and director, Cherylyn Russell explains, the first principle is always preservation. “ARTSHOP’s custom framing design ethos is to firstly preserve the piece — that is, facilitate artwork treatment if necessary and subsequently design a framing solution that is an archivally sound storage unit.” As she often puts it, “The principles of conservation framing are summarised thus: ‘to keep from harm, decay or loss’. That means the artwork must retain its complete integrity.”

From there, the framing becomes an aesthetic conversation with the artwork itself. “Aesthetically, we seek to extend the aesthetic elements of the artwork or object with its framing, so that the framing is a visual extension of the artwork,” Cherylyn says — a sentiment that aligns naturally with Keelie’s own approach to jewellery and illustration.

illustration arrived with a subdued, antique styling that immediately shaped the design direction. “Keely is clever; she could have represented this jewel in plenty of different ways, but her instinct to lean into a vintage, almost architectural‑simplicity style for the illustration was inspired,” Cherylyn says. That instinct guided the framing conversation from the outset. “The

illustration spoke to us about its framing!” she recalls. Together, she, Lucinda and Evan discussed their goals: “preserve the work, beautify the work with materials, forms and colours that extend the artwork and do not compete with it, and also use this opportunity to demonstrate our skills.”

Aesthetic and conservation considerations sit side‑by‑side in this process. As Cherylyn notes, “Long‑term conservation considerations do not need to compete. Conservation‑standard materials are readily available; the diversity of colours, finishes, textures are quite limitless!” The skill lies in knowing how to use them responsibly — reversible mounting, pH‑neutral materials, UV‑filtering glazing, and strong, spacious construction that stabilises and protects the artwork over time.

, the team developed an aesthetic palette that echoed the illustration’s vintage sensibility: Italian warm silver‑leaf Deco‑era moulding, pH‑neutral warm pewter suede matting, and generous proportions. As the piece took shape, some details emerged instinctively. “It’s great when an artwork is just so pretty, so intact in its aesthetic. It simply asks, ‘just make me more like me!’” Cherylyn says. This palette creates a soft, lustrous edge that nods to the white gold and diamonds of the mirror‑ball‑inspired piece within, while a luxurious suede mat lends the presentation depth and refined opulence. The artwork sits within two frames rather than one — a substantial outer frame paired with a finer inner frame formed from antique silver beads sourced from

            — each adding its own sense of balance, weight and presence to the finished work. Cherylyn also added hand‑colouring to the background of the outer frame moulding to subtly increase contrast. “Knowing how to use these materials to enhance an artwork is the role of a skilled designer; knowing how to use the materials responsibly to preserve the artwork is the role of a skilled maker.”

The construction was equally considered — elevated matting to ensure the artwork never touches the glazing, an invisible channel spacer for ventilation, UV‑filtering, zero‑reflection glazing, and archival hinges that allow safe future removal. These decisions reflect ARTSHOP’s conservation priorities: to protect the illustration for decades to come, and reversable if needed.

Throughout the process, the illustration was handled with strict conservation protocols — cotton gloves, dust‑free workspace, controlled conditions, and careful observation before final boxing. As Cherylyn puts it, “People do not spend money on framing with anything other than the expectation that the framing activity safeguards their artwork or item to be framed. People are making an investment.”

Keelie shared with us what this partnership means to Hogans. "The framing becomes an extension of the piece," she told us, "guiding how it will be viewed, and reinforcing its status as a collectible." For us at ARTSHOP, it's a reminder of why this work matters so deeply: a frame is never a final step to someone else's piece, but part of how that piece will be experienced for years to come — and proof, to us, that thoughtful, custom conservation-standard framing is an art form in its own right.

Designing for LifeFlight carries its own special meaning for Hogans too. "This piece sits as one of our hero creations each year," Keelie explained, "allowing us to showcase both our craftsmanship and technical capabilities."

It’s a sentiment we share at ARTSHOP. Both businesses hold deep respect for the vital work LifeFlight provides to the Darling Downs and the wider community, and contributing through our respective crafts to that cause is a privilege.

Cherylyn notes that this responsibility extends well beyond the annual LifeFlight collaborations. “I estimate that at least 50% of our work at ARTSHOP is correcting the harm caused to artworks that have been irresponsibly framed previously at some point in the life of that artwork.” She approaches those conversations with the same care she brings to the framing work itself: “…we will always provide our clients with full information about the ‘health’ of their artwork, whether treatment is required or not, and provide help and guidance about their options.” It is part of why collaborations like this feel so meaningful — they allow ARTSHOP to show what conservation‑standard framing can achieve when the process is considered from the very beginning.

And now, the moment everyone was waiting for: all those who entered the Balloon Pop helped raise an extraordinary $45,000 toward a new LifeFlight Clive Berghofer Visitor Experience and Education Centre.

We hope the lucky winners, now custodians of these pieces, feel what Keelie describes as an immediate sense of awe — "not only in its beauty and brilliance, but in the craftsmanship and intention behind every detail" — and that ARTSHOP's framing of the illustration plays its own part in that feeling.

Some objects hold a moment so completely that looking at them feels like stepping into the memory or story itself. A grandfather’s war medals still pinned to their original ribbon, an ancestor’s pocket watch, spectacles, or a family Bible softened by generations of hands, a baby’s first coming‑home outfit — each carries its own story. Sporting memorabilia sits alongside these heirlooms: a signed jersey from a sportsperson or team woven through someone’s long‑held sporting loyalty, a baggy green cap or wickets from a defining cricket match. We also keep collectables brought home from places that mattered. Organisational and corporate artefacts belong in this picture too — pieces that record a company’s history, achievements and identity across time.

We hold on to these things because they are evidence of moments that matter. Framing objects like these is why conservation framing exists — and it sits at the heart of ARTSHOP’s purpose as a conservation framing studio. One of the most privileged commissions to pass through our Toowoomba workshop this year involved two significant pieces sourced by Brian and Kerry Carroll of Carroll Truck Sales: a signed riding crop and a photograph from a history‑making horse race, both donated to the recent LifeFlight Toowoomba Gala for their future custodians. This project is a clear example of preservation‑led design applied to objects beyond traditional works on paper or canvas, and in this blog we use it to explore how thoughtful, conservation‑grade framing supports and protects items of significance.

           Why objects deserve conservation framing

Objects, heirlooms and memorabilia arrive at ARTSHOP in many forms. Some are two‑dimensional — documents of significance such as a young child’s painting, vintage photographs, certificates or hand‑written letters — each carrying its own story and preservation needs. These behave like paper: expanding and contracting with environmental changes and requiring framing that allows movement rather than restraint.

Others are three‑dimensional, such as medals, textiles, jerseys and other family heirlooms or memorabilia. These have weight, depth and shape, and require a structural approach.

What both types of objects share is that they’re often stored rather than displayed. Many end up in drawers, cupboards or boxes — not because they lack significance, but because their owners aren’t sure how to store or display them safely and beautifully.

That’s a loss, because everyday storage doesn’t truly protect them. Even tucked away, objects remain vulnerable to dust, humidity and gradual deterioration. Whereas with conservation framing, the same piece can be enjoyed every day while being better safeguarded than it ever was in storage.

understood the significance of the items they had sourced for the Gala. The Darling Downs has a large and passionate equine community, and the Carrolls recognised that these pieces would resonate deeply. Their decision to entrust the signed riding crop and signed race photograph to a conservation framing studio reflects the respect they held for the moment these objects represent.

ARTSHOP donated the conservation framing for these items, as we have in recent years for another of the Gala’s major philanthropic offerings — the illustration of the heirlooms donated by Hogans Family Jewellers for the exciting Balloon Pop raffle. It’s our way of contributing our craft to a service that supports our Darling Downs community.

Conservation framing evolved from the archival practices used in galleries and museums, primarily to protect works of art — but those methods aren’t just for institutions. They’re equally important for objects that hold personal or historical meaning. Signed memorabilia, medals, textiles, bound volumes, historical photographs and other rare or heirloom artefacts can all be framed safely, provided the framer understands the materials, how they behave over time and the methods required to support them.

The J-MAC project initially brought together two very different objects: a photographic print, a leather and wood riding crop. Then, in consultation with the Carrolls, ARTSHOP commissioned a third element: an engraved silver plaque to help tell the story of these pieces and communicate their significance. Each object required its own approach to support and frame it, yet all needed to sit together as one cohesive piece.

The first challenge was depth. A riding crop has varying materials, thickness, an extended length and some weight to it. A plaque has a fixed, elevated profile with hard edges and enough depth to create its own shadow line within the frame. A photograph sits almost flat. To frame them together, a design structure was needed that supported each object individually while presenting them as a unified story.

The custom framing process for objects like this can be very complex and requires informed design and planning. This piece needed multiple internal windows, each built to a different depth to house the individual objects, engineered to ensure they sit securely and never touch the glazing. It was a true team effort from the ARTSHOP framers — each contributing aesthetic ideas and stabilising solutions to ensure the final design was structurally sound and visually cohesive.

To meet conservation standards, each object was mounted using fully reversible methods to ensure its integrity throughout time and the piece’s future. We used hidden stitches, fine archival wires, custom mounts and discreet hinges to support each piece structurally without altering it. The internal surrounds were finished with complementary‑toned, museum‑standard fabric matting, and the entire work was glazed with full‑UV‑filtering, anti‑reflective Tru Vue Museum Glass®, a form of glazing designed specifically for preservation.

The items in this commission trace back to an afternoon in December 2022 at Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong. Riding Romantic Warrior, James McDonald — J MAC — delivered a history making performance in the LONGINES Hong Kong Cup. The pair claimed a rare four-and-a-half-length victory, set a 2,000 metre speed record that still stands, and secured what would become the first of four consecutive Hong Kong Cup wins, the most by any racing history.

McDonald is now regarded as the world’s best jockey and one of the finest thoroughbred riders of all time. He is the most successful Australian‑based Group 1 jockey to date, recently securing his 130th major title and surpassing the legendary Damien Oliver, who held the previous Australian record of 129 Group 1 wins. James McDonald has also won the prestigious LONGINES World’s Best Jockey award three times — in 2022, 2024 and 2025. Raised on a family farm in rural New Zealand, he learned to ride among the rolling hills that shaped his early years. On race days, he carries a small piece of paper with four words written on it: See it. Feel it. Win it. Enjoy it.

The riding crop used in the 2022 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup victory, together with the official race photograph, became the centrepiece of this framed commission for LifeFlight Toowoomba — two objects carrying one extraordinary moment. They are artefacts of that moment, with the plaque interpreting it for those who weren’t there and ensuring the story travels with them long after memories fade, strengthening their meaning and investment value.

For our ARTSHOP team, this commission carried meaning beyond the technical work. It was an opportunity to honour Carroll Truck Sales’ generous gift and support LifeFlight Toowoomba. Pieces like this remind us why conservation framing matters: it protects not just objects, but the stories behind them. Working with Brian and Kerry Carroll to honour J‑MAC’s story was a true privilege — ensuring a piece of sporting history could be returned to the community in a way that will endure long after the event itself.

When clients bring objects to ARTSHOP, the first step is always understanding the story — where it came from, what it means, and the space it will live in. Every object has its own character and history, and those qualities shape the design that follows. A nineteenth‑century photograph won’t want the same presentation as a baby’s first homecoming outfit, a set of service medals, or a community‑sport memento. A weathered medal calls for a treatment that respects its era and materials, while a contemporary item may suit a cleaner, more minimal finish.

Once the story is understood, we follow a museum‑standard sequence to ensure the object is protected before it is manufactured. We begin with the object itself — its material, age, fragility and surface sensitivity — then determine its conservation requirements, such as reversibility, humidity response and light sensitivity.

We then address support and engineering. Some objects need discreet internal structures; others require shadow‑box depth, concealed platforms or custom mounts. Works on paper may need conservation hinge‑mounting for humidity movement, while dimensional objects might rely on hidden stitches, archival wires or unobtrusive cradled supports to distribute weight evenly.

With the object secure, we refine proportion and layout, colour and texture through matting, fabrics and finishes. We choose the appropriate glazing level, such as UV‑filtering, anti‑reflective museum glass, and ensure the frame is sealed and stable for the long term.

A frame should support the object, not compete with it. At ARTSHOP, we see custom conservation framing as an artform — a considered extension of the piece it surrounds, elevating its presence while providing the protection it needs to endure.

Toowoomba’s bright skies mean high UV exposure, and even indirect sunlight can fade pigments and weaken organic materials over time. Tru Vue Museum Glass® helps guard against this, but placement still matters: a wall out of direct sun and away from heat sources is one of the most effective protections.

Climate also shapes day‑to‑day care. Dust stirred up in dry spells, combined with humidity, can encourage mould if left undisturbed. A soft, dry cloth and gentle cleaning are usually enough. Good airflow and stable humidity further support longevity. If a piece shows signs of damp or age, ARTSHOP offers professional inspection, assessment and restoration.

Somewhere in Toowoomba, the framed J-MAC memorabilia has found its new home and that wall is indeed a proud place. The rider’s crop that once urged a champion thoroughbred to a record-breaking finish, the photograph that captured the moment, and the plaque that records its significance now sit together in a frame built to protect them for years to come.

When an artwork or object is presented to our Toowoomba studio for framing, we know it represents far more than the materials it is made of. It might be a souvenir print or artwork collected on a special holiday, a painting or stitched textile made by an ancestor, a historical photograph, a handmade replica model, a hard‑earned professional certificate, an engineering blueprint or milestone artefact from a business’s archives, a family heirloom waiting to be honoured, or an Indigenous artwork carrying cultural knowledge and connection to Country.

Whatever form each piece takes, the piece arrives with a story. ARTSHOP’s role is to sympathetically and beautifully present — and preserve — that story with care.

Framing at its best, is thoughtful, unhurried, exacting work — historically and scientifically informed, ethically grounded and attentive to the details that shape how an artwork is seen and appreciated. Frames do more than hold an object; they contextualise it, protect it and find that subtle balance that supports the piece’s aesthetics and its voice.

           What conservation framing is

Conservation framing is the method developed and used by museums, galleries and collectors to protect artworks and objects without altering their original condition. But you do not need to be a museum or gallery to use this highest standard of custom framing; most pieces we frame belong to artists and collectors who want their work not only presented beautifully, but also protected, or they belong to families who trust us with irreplaceable, deeply personal items.

A good friend of ARTSHOP's recently shared how she had her now-passed grandmother’s oil paintings reframed years ago, not realising the framing service she paid for was not conservation grade. The framing materials have since deteriorated, and climate fluctuations have left permanent marks on the artworks. These are ‘personally priceless’, one‑of‑a‑kind works, so this deterioration of pieces that connected our friend to her grandmother’s memory, is devastating. We are investigating some remedial actions for our friend; hopefully the ‘standard’ framing is reversible so the pieces can be reframed in the future using methods and materials that will be restorative.

           Why conservation framing matters

At ARTSHOP, conservation framing begins with assessing and understanding the artwork itself — its materials, its condition and its historical context. A nineteenth‑century antique piece behaves differently compared to a contemporary piece, and those differences influence the conservation choices we make. Understanding how a piece was made, handled and displayed across time helps us make aesthetic decisions that respect its story while also ensuring its long‑term preservation.

At times, a client brings us a historical or sentimental piece — such as an ancestral photograph or antique object — but wishes to frame it in a contemporary way that reflects the home or workplace where it will be displayed. These collaborative conversations are an important part of the design process. Conservation framing is not only about protecting the physical object; it is also about honouring how the client intends to live with it. Balancing the artwork’s history with the aesthetic of its new environment requires careful judgement and thoughtful material choices.

           How conservation framing works

The way an artwork is held in place is just as important as the materials which surround it. Conservation framing uses reversible and pH-neutral mounting methods — no glues, pressure-sensitive adhesives or tapes that leave residue, stain the artwork or restrict its natural movement.

Works on paper need to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. That is why we use conservation hinge‑mounting, which supports the artwork’s weight gently while allowing it to move as it needs to. The artwork is supported, not affixed, so it can be safely removed in the future without damage; this is especially important for pieces with historical or cultural significance.

Throughout ARTSHOP’s conservation framing process for your piece, strict handling protocols are followed in our studio, including written and photographic documentation before, during and after treatment and framing. Cotton gloves, pH-neutral storage packing, dust‑free workspaces and atmospherically and bacterially controlled conditions ensure the artwork remains safe and pristine. Once the framing package is assembled, it is carefully sealed to protect against uncontrolled aspects of life beyond our studio, including dust, airborne pollutants and insects, helping to maintain a stable internal environment over time.

           Key elements of conservation framing

Conservation framing is built on a series of thoughtful, interconnected choices.

           PH-neutral, archival materials:

Acidic or high-alkaline boards and commercial papers can cause yellowing and brittleness. Only pH‑neutral, archival‑grade materials support the artwork’s longevity and long‑term stability.

           UV‑filtering glazing:

Light damage is irreversible. Our Tru Vue ® UV‑filtering glazing options help protect delicate pigments, photographs, fabrics and works on paper from fading, aging and embrittlement.

           Reversible archival mounting:

We never use glues or pressure-sensitive adhesives that bond permanently. Reversible conservation-grade hinges suspend the artwork safely while allowing future removal without damage.

           Space and correct support:

Building adequate space and separation into the framing construction design is essential to ensure the artwork never touches the glazing, preventing moisture transfer leading to foxing or mildew, and surface adhesion or abrasion.

           Sealing against contaminants:

A properly sealed frame protects from dust, airborne pollutants and insects, whilst allowing adequate ventilation.

           Humidity and temperature awareness:

Environmental conditions play a critical role in preservation of artworks and objects. Our framing practices minimise risks associated with fluctuating humidity and temperature. We regularly consult and advise on appropriate measures for environmental stability in the home and collection venue.

Anything precious and meaningful to you should be framed to conservation standards. Works on paper, photographs, textiles, embroideries, certificates, maps, memorabilia, objects and canvases can all be preserved using conservation methods. Many pieces also carry historical or cultural significance, and understanding their context helps us choose the most appropriate approach.

The combination of great design, excellent craftsmanship and adherence to conservation standards in custom framing, is increasingly rare. This same combination allows us to create frames that are both beautiful and preservation‑led and to operating a practice where every artwork or object is treated with the same care and respect.

Then we work with you to design a framing solution that complements the artwork aesthetically while ensuring it is fully protected. Our quality assurance processes ensure we deliver the same meticulous care we have built our reputation on since 1991.

Art and picture framing: Protecting your pieces in Toowoomba’s variable climate

Discover how ARTSHOP's conservation‑grade art and picture framing in Toowoomba safeguards against our region's dust, humidity, and seasonal shifts.

Here are some simple steps artists and collectors can take to preserve framed art in our region’s shifting seasons

In Toowoomba, we’re blessed to be part of a vibrant art community and an environment that encourages creativity. Our variable climate also brings quiet challenges, especially when it comes to art and the picture framing that often surrounds it. Preserving the pieces that our clients and collectors treasure requires thoughtful protection against seasonal shifts, humidity, and dust—all of which can quietly compromise the integrity of framed artwork over time.

With warm summers that alternate between humidity and prolonged dry spells—with the latter often stirring up agricultural dust—and crisp winters that vary in moisture levels, our region experiences transitions that can accelerate artwork and collectibles degradation. Without proper protection, artworks may be vulnerable to warping, fading, and mould growth over time.

At ARTSHOP, we approach these challenges with a blend of conservation science and thoughtful design. Our techniques are grounded in research and refined through decades of hands-on experience—trusted by collectors who value both the beauty, sentiment and longevity of their pieces. Whether you are framing a work of original art, a family heirloom, a contemporary print, or a treasured photograph, conservation-grade care ensures your piece remains safe and enduring.

           Surface Cleaning

Dust in Toowoomba accumulates and settles on artwork and collectibles, especially during dry spells. If left undisturbed, this dust can embed into artwork fibres and, in humid conditions, contribute to a situation where mould may develop. Regular surface cleaning with a soft, dry cloth helps prevent this buildup. We recommend avoiding moisture-based cleaners unless advised by your ARTSHOP consultant or another professional conservator. A consistent cleaning routine is one of the simplest ways to honour and protect your framed pieces.

           Airflow and Placement

Where your artwork lives, matters. Poor air circulation, combined with inappropriately high levels of Relative Humidity (RH) can trap moisture behind glass within the frame, especially with artworks positioned in room corners or rooms with limited ventilation. We encourage our clients to avoid placing pieces near kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry areas, wherever possible. Instead, choose well-ventilated spaces with stable environmental conditions. The positive effects of a dehumidifier or air purifier can help regulate the environment and safeguard your collection, regardless of your home type.

Toowoomba’s bright skies bring high UV exposure, which can fade pigments, yellow and embrittle paper and other substrates, and degrade adhesives over time. Even indirect sunlight can cause damage—especially to works on paper, textiles, and photographs. That’s why UV protection is a key part of conservation framing.

At ARTSHOP, we use the TruVue range of UV-protective glazing, which block up to 99% of UV rays. TruVue’s Museum Glass, for example, offer zero-reflection, 99% UV filtering and exceptional optical clarity, making it a worthwhile upgrade for both preservation and presentation. By reducing exposure to harmful light, UV-filtering glazing helps slow deterioration and protect the vibrancy of your artwork for years to come.

Mounting isn’t just about keeping art in place—it’s about honouring its material life. Pressure-sensitive adhesives may seem convenient, but they can stain and warp artworks, and cause the artwork to become brittle over time. Conservation hinging, by contrast, uses archival materials and reversible techniques that support the artwork without causing damage.

The paper itself responds to its environment—warping and waving with shifts in temperature and humidity. That’s part of its life, too. Original works on paper should be hinge-mounted to allow this natural movement, with framing designed with adequate internal elevation to keep the artwork safely distanced from the glazing.

Every choice—from how a piece is framed to where it is displayed—plays a role in protecting artwork from the potentially harmful effects of Toowoomba’s changing climate. Museum-standard framing is not reserved for galleries alone—it is for any collector who values the stories behind their art and objects. At ARTSHOP Toowoomba, we specialise in conservation framing and restoration tailored to your home and your workplace, and to our region’s conditions. Our approach is grounded in conservation science and shaped by decades of experience. Whether you’re refreshing an old frame or preparing a new work for display, we are here to help you protect what matters—with care, clarity, and respect.

First acquired at the Downlands Art Exhibition in 2014/2015, it was reframed in 2021 by ARTSHOP Toowoomba in Italian warm silver leaf with a hand‑coloured slip. Now housed in a climate‑controlled domestic environment and inspected and cleaned annually, it is carefully maintained to ensure its preservation and presentation for generations to come.

Still carrying the inspiration of the 2025 RME Downlands Art Exhibition, we at ARTSHOP Toowoomba remain buoyed by the beauty and the generosity of people’s time and endeavours that defined this event. Held at Downlands College from September 20–24, the Graham Centre became a showcase of more than 800 artworks by local and international artists.

Now in its 38th year, the RME Downlands Art Exhibition is an event that engages the Downlands community and beyond with artists and their works. As the main fundraiser for the Parents and Friends Committee, it helps enhance College facilities, improve teaching and learning, and support the pastoral care of students. Over the years, proceeds have funded new art equipment, expanded the school’s art collection, and contributed to the future artist-in-residence program.

It was a privilege for ARTSHOP to be a Gold Sponsor of this event. Additionally, in my capacity as a Director of the exhibition's naming sponsor, I had the honour of speaking at the opening gala on Friday, September 19. I shared a message about the power of art to inspire, connect, and be of service to others. As I said that evening, I knew I was preaching to the converted when I observed that art lifts our souls.

           Intentional beauty that shapes us

I shared a memory that has shaped me from an early age:

“I consider the first time I observed that something was beautiful. It was a fragrance—the jasmine on a summer morning—drifting through my window as I lay in bed, looking up into the colossal gum tree in our neighbour’s yard. A gentle breeze carried the scent from the garden my mother had planted, down the northern pathway beside our home. As I rolled my head to the side, I noticed the tiny cut-glass vase filled with fresh flowers, arranged by my mother and placed on a hand-embroidered placemat.”

It was more than a fragrance. It was something crafted with care and intention. My mother’s love of doing things well, her desire to create beauty, and her practical way of showing care for her family made me feel safe and treasured.

That same inspiration has shaped my career and continues to drive me to create spaces where others feel valued and encouraged to explore their creativity. I realised that I have spent my life working to create beautiful and safe environments. If I can create a space that is understanding and enriching, others may be encouraged to explore their potential and contribute great value to their communities.

Our artists live this same examined life—drawing deeply from their experiences, environments, and observations—and they skilfully translate messages and lessons for us in their work, providing opportunities for reflection, enrichment, and joy.

As Toowoomba prepares for the Carnival of Flowers, we’re reminded that another much-loved moment in the community’s cultural calendar is just around the corner: the 2025 RME Downlands Art Exhibition, running from 20–24 September 2025.

A hand reaches for a flower gently, set against a warm backdrop. It speaks to the fleeting beauty of small moments and the quiet strength found in them.” Its warm bronze tones and delicate composition make this work a ethereal and contemplative piece.

His long-standing connection to Downlands College and curatorial vision—together with the exceptional exhibiting artists—continue to elevate the calibre of the catalogue and enrich the exhibition experience.

Beyond celebrating art, the exhibition is a meaningful expression of community. As the main fundraiser for the Downlands Parents and Friends Committee, it supports the next generation of artists, enhances the Downlands College facilities, and contributes to professional development and pastoral care of its students. In this way, the RME Downlands Art Exhibition leaves a legacy that adds to the richness of life and the hope that art can inspire.

Sometimes, a piece of art captures more than imagination and beauty—it holds a story, a purpose, even a legacy. Such was the case in a truly special collaboration that ARTSHOP Toowoomba had the privilege of supporting for Hogans Family Jewellers, created in celebration of the 2025 LifeFlight Toowoomba Gala—where community, craftsmanship, and generosity converged in honour of care itself.

At the heart of this collaboration was the Nightingale Dress Ring—a sublime, luminous, and one-of-a-kind heirloom designed by award-winning jeweller Keelie Sander (also known as Keelie Skou). A creation born of both intention and craftsmanship, the ring drew upon the golden theme of this year’s Gala, and its name takes quiet inspiration from the legacy of Florence Nightingale, whose pioneering spirit echoes through the lifesaving work of LifeFlight in our region.

The design—anchored by a golden South Sea pearl, complemented by yellow, pink, and peach sapphires with hints of lemon hues, and elegantly accented with diamonds—conjures warmth and an enduring circle of care. It was no surprise that the Nightingale Dress Ring became one of the gala’s most coveted treasures, sought after by hundreds of ‘balloon pop’ hopefuls, each wishing to call it their own.

But the story didn’t end with the ring. To further honour the piece, Keelie hand-painted an original gouache watercolour illustration of the Nightingale Dress Ring—a delicate blueprint rendering that translated the form into a second artistic medium. It was this illustration that ARTSHOP Toowoomba was entrusted to preserve.

A: Painting our radiant golden South Sea pearl was a challenge unlike any other. I had never painted a gemstone of this scale, and capturing its rare beauty demanded precision. In my home studio, I rely on various stone charts to guide my colour choices. By applying multiple layers, I create dimension and depth, making the gemstone appear lifelike. The process requires patience and careful observation—every detail must be just right. I’m always refining my techniques and pushing my skills further.

Q: What were some challenges in translating a three-dimensional ring into a two-dimensional artwork?

A: The key to painting jewellery is mastering shading and understanding how light interacts with metal and gemstones. Gold—especially yellow gold—is a joy to work with, offering incredible warmth and richness. This particular piece was exciting because the gold not only had texture but also bold, rounded curves resembling petals. Layering shades of yellow, brown, and white allowed me to create depth, making the artwork truly pop. Though the illustration is two-dimensional, strategic highlights and shadows give it a three-dimensional feel. Capturing how light plays across the surfaces was certainly a challenge, but it’s also the most rewarding aspect of the process.

Framing a special artwork is just as much about embellishing a beautiful display—it’s about preserving the piece for many years to come. At ARTSHOP Toowoomba, every step is handled with expert care, using museum-grade conservation practices to both protect and showcase the work at its finest.

Our team approached the framing with a deep understanding of materials and time-honoured techniques. Premium conservation-grade materials—naturally pH-neutral to prevent deterioration—were carefully selected to ensure the artwork’s longevity.

The piece was mounted within a hand-finished, ornate Italian gold-leaf moulding, paired with miniature frame edging, and floated within a window of black cotton ragmat. For the final layer of care, we chose TruVue Museum Glass, with its optical clarity and low-reflection finish, allowing the artwork’s fine details and colours to shine while protecting the piece from harmful UV light.

Throughout the process, strict handling protocols were followed: cotton gloves, dust-free workspaces, and controlled conditions ensured the artwork remained safe and pristine. The finished frame not only enhances the illustration’s beauty but also creates a lasting, protective environment to help preserve it over time.

Framing an artwork is a careful, detailed process that combines craftsmanship, skill, and a deep passion for presenting and preserving art. As a proud member of the Picture Framers Guild of Australia, ARTSHOP Toowoomba is committed to delivering the highest standard of framing for every client, collector, and project.

At ARTSHOP Toowoomba, we often reflect on what it means to be part of a creative, vibrant and connected community. So the word 'facet' resonates deeply with us — it refers to one of the many sides of something greater, a point of reflection, or a polished surface of a gem crafted to catch the light.

We are inspired by how our customers reflect the many facets of our community — its stories, voices, people, places, and perspectives.

From collectors whose lives are enriched by original works of art and craft, to the artists who bring these creations to life, and the treasured objects families entrust us to preserve, we celebrate the ways art connects us to our experiences, emotions, and memories.

We are delighted to warmly welcome Evan Hollis to the ARTSHOP team this week.

For many, Evan is a familiar name—he has been the visionary curator of the annual, and highly-regarded, Downlands College Art Exhibition, where he has skilfully led the administrative and volunteer teams since 2006. Evan is widely respected within the Southeast Queensland arts communities and beyond, bringing over 30 years of experience in the creative arts to ARTSHOP.

His art expertise spans a wide array of visual art forms, including printmaking, photography (both digital and film), ceramics, textiles, and various sculpture techniques such as casting and mechanics.

Additionally, his curatorial skills have been honed through his involvement in numerous large-scale exhibitions, as well as set design and construction for the theatre world, showcasing his imaginative vision and mechanical dexterity.

With a deep knowledge of art and arts education, Evan is a valued figure among students, educational colleagues, artists and collectors.

"ARTSHOP holds a unique and trusted place in the Darling Downs and beyond, known for its wonderful design and workmanship in custom picture framing and conservation-grade standards. I’m excited to join Cherylyn and the team and to get to know the clients and artists who have favoured this long-standing studio since 1991," Evan shared.

Cherylyn Russell, ARTSHOP’s Director, added, “Evan’s sound knowledge of artwork types, his sensitive mechanical dexterity and his curatorial brilliance make him an ideal fit for ARTSHOP. It is serendipitous that someone of Evan's calibre is available to join our team and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board.”
