ARTSHOP recently had the privilege of participating in FRAME: Concept, History and Conservation — Symposium 3 [ @framesymposium3 ] in Hobart, Tasmania, gaining insights that will inform and strengthen our conservation framing work for artists, collectors, and corporate archives and collections. It was remarkable to hear directly from curators of frame collections at the Musée du Louvre, the Rijksmuseum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Georgia Tech, the National Museum in Warsaw, NGV, QAGOMA, AGNSW, and conservation framers from around the world. The program explored frame history, conservation ethics, and the science underpinning contemporary conservation practice — including condition assessments, material behaviour, preventive care, and considered, sustainable approaches to treatment. We also visited the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and were warmly welcomed at Government House by Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO, and their team. A heartfelt thank you to the Symposium organisers — especially Anita Gowers — and to the local and international speakers and fellow conservation framers for such a generous exchange of knowledge. And thank you to our clients for your patience while we stepped away to deepen our practice. I’m so grateful to @evanh1965 and @lu__steele for attending alongside me; learning together added so much richness to the week. Dangerously modern perspectives … Following my wonderful clay immersion week at the @mcgregor_school Summer School, here are some of the heroines from my visit to 'Dangerously Modern' at the @artgalleryofnsw in Sydney yesterday — women whose stories will stay with me long after I stepped away. What impacted me was how the perspective of this scene mirrored the narrative of this beautifully curated exhibition. In the foreground, Eva Benson’s luminous bronze Psyche (c.1919) holds the moment with beauty, grace, and quiet resolve. These pieces form part of Dangerously Modern: Australian Women Artists in Europe 1890–1940, which is now showing at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It would be so wonderful if the exhibition eventually made its way to Brisbane ?. I love the way art infuses my mornings through the quiet ritual of coffee in my favourite mug—crafted by ceramicist @petaberghofer as part of her Rinse & Repeat series. Peta’s practice often reimagines the everyday, transforming familiar objects into sculptural abstractions. Her hand-built vessels create still life environments that blur the line between domestic and gallery spaces. This January, I’ll be immersing myself — hands and heart ❤️ — in this ceramics artform at the @mcgregor_school 5 day workshop with Peta at the @unisqsoca. Heirlooms are rich with stories about our loved ones — the way they lived, what they treasured. ARTSHOP values your stories, and the pieces that help these precious stories be continually retold. This 19th-century mirror, with original convex silvered glass, gold-leafed frame, and original chain, lived on the walls of my paternal grandmother Jean's house. I recall it moving between her sunroom — where my cousins and I played often, running around Jean's indoor plants and baby grand piano — and the spare bedroom right down the other end of her home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The mirror took on such a different feeling in that bedroom, with its dim natural lighting and family portraits. I admired it one time, in conversation with my grandmother Jean, in my early 20s, as I immersed myself in my picture framing craft career. She asked me to look over it and make sure it was in great condition. I did so, and then she would not accept it back — asking me to look after it for my life. Which I have, and I do. A hand reaches for a flower gently, set against a warm backdrop. It speaks to the fleeting beauty of small moments and the quiet strength found in them.” As Toowoomba prepares to bloom for the Carnival of Flowers, this reminds us that the annual and renowned RME Downlands Art Exhibition @downlandsart is just around the corner. Community, craftsmanship, and incredible generosity recently came together in a truly special collaboration when our friends @hogansfamilyjewellers requested ARTSHOP Toowoomba’s expertise to custom frame a delicate illustration that formed part of their extraordinary donation to the 2025 LifeFlight Toowoomba gala: the sublime Nightingale Dress Ring. Undoubtedly inspired by the legacy of Florence Nightingale—and the symmetry between her pioneering spirit and LifeFlight’s brave, lifesaving care, rescue, and recovery in our region—the stunning, one-of-a-kind Nightingale Dress Ring was created by award-winning jeweller Keelie Sander (aka @keelie.skou). Drawing on the gala’s ‘gold’ theme, this true heirloom piece was admired and coveted by the hundreds of ‘balloon pop’ ticket holders who hoped to make it their own. Adding to its beauty, Keelie hand-painted a gouache illustration of the Nightingale Dress Ring, which we honoured with a custom frame using museum-grade techniques: hand-finished, ornate Italian gold leaf moulding, paired with miniature frame edging a black cotton mat window, and TruVue Museum Glass to preserve and protect. Beyond showcasing fine craftsmanship, this collaboration reflects the generosity of our community and its shared commitment to making a meaningful difference.
