There is something wonderful about helping our clients preserve the stories, memories and pieces that hold personal meaning for them. We recently restored, digitised and conservation framed this beautiful historical photograph, an irreplaceable connection to generations past. Damage from humidity, insect ingress and UV light is very common in photographs of this age, especially as conservation framing knowledge and materials were not widely understood or accessible at the time. This project began with a gentle dry document cleaning method, followed by professional digitisation so the image could be shared with the wider family without handling the original. For the conservation framing, we retained the original mounting board to preserve historical integrity and used an Artcare Archival Foamboard which absorbs environmental and airborne pollutants within the framing package, creating a safer microenvironment. A gorgeous Espresso Crescent RagMat Noir was selected, which is a premium cotton matboard with exceptional acid free qualities, fade resistance and lifetime warranty. Conservation Clear Glass was added to protect the photograph from harmful UV light while offering excellent clarity. To complete the design, we collaborated with the client to select a beautiful Italian Mantilla hardwood moulding, lace inspired to echo the matriarch's Victorian era garments in the photograph, along with a delicate silver beaded fillet that reflects the period appropriate character and craftsmanship suited to a piece of this age. This treasured ancestral photograph is now protected, beautifully presented and ready to be passed down to future generations. An annual tradition in recent years has seen ARTSHOP entrusted with conservation framing an illustration of an heirloom jewel our friends at @hogansfamilyjewellers have designed and donated for the Toowoomba @lifeflight_au Gala Fundraiser. There is always much anticipation amongst the ARTSHOP team when we see the piece award‑winning jeweller @keelie.skou has crafted for the Balloon Pop — one of the Gala’s most anticipated philanthropic moments. This year’s most sublime piece lived up to that excited expectation. The 'Fleur de Lune' illustration arrived with a vintage styling that immediately shaped the framing conversation in the studio. We responded with a palette built from Italian warm silver‑leaf Deco‑era moulding and luxurious warm pewter suede matting to further elevate the illustration, never competing with it. The design was completed with an antique silver‑bead inner frame sourced from Range Antiques, and fine hand‑colouring was added to the outer frame moulding to gently lift contrast. Some objects hold a moment so completely that looking at them feels like stepping back into memory or story itself. New to the ARTSHOP blog, we’re sharing a case study of object conservation framing behind one of the most privileged commissions to pass through our studio — a signed riding crop and race photograph from a history‑making victory ride by the world’s best jockey, James McDonald (J‑MAC). We have devoted this past week to supporting this Saturday's LifeFlight Toowoomba Gala with our friends Brian and Kerry Carroll of @carrolltrucksales. Brian and Kerry have privately sourced and generously gifted to LifeFlight signed horse racing items by none other than James McDonald – J-MAC, the world’s best jockey. It is a privilege to prepare displays of such distinction, given so wholeheartedly to an important community cause. The set includes J‑MAC's own personally signed riding crop and signed official race photograph from Romantic Warrior’s 2022 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup victory — a history‑making performance in which the duo delivered a rare 4½‑length win, set a 2,000m speed record that still stands, and claimed what would become the first of four consecutive Hong Kong Cup wins — the most by any horse in the race’s history! The custom framing process for objects is complex, requiring extensive design and planning for construction, with multiple windows of varying depths to house the individual objects. Conservation standard framing ensures that all objects are mounted reversibly, with their full integrity intact. We have deployed hidden stitches, wires, mounts and hinges to achieve this conservation standard, surrounding the objects with museum standard fabric matting and TruVue full-UV filtering, zero-reflection Museum Glass. A professionally written and etched silver plaque tells the compelling story of J-MAC's legend and why these signed pieces represent such a significant moment in history. We suspect there will be strong backing from our equine community and generous #LifeFlight supporters across the region when the bidding hits the straight 🏇

And throughout it all, the Love of My Life Mr Russell, recovered from knee replacement surgery like the disciplined champion that he is. Recreating original hand finishes is one of our uncommon specialisations that our clients (and our team!) enjoy and love. Here we have watercolour French lines and a panel wash recreated right here in our conservation framing workshop, applied by ruling pen and brush to a gorgeous double thick 8ply ph-neutral 100% cotton RagMat. We perform a test of colours and widths prior to decorating the hand cut 8ply mat. The beautiful original painting was also cleaned prior to reframing. 🎨 🖼️💚

ARTSHOP recently had the privilege of participating in FRAME: Concept, History and Conservation — Symposium 3 [ @framesymposium3 ] in Hobart, Tasmania, gaining insights that will inform and strengthen our conservation framing work for artists, collectors, and corporate archives and collections. It was remarkable to hear directly from curators of frame collections at the Musée du Louvre, the Rijksmuseum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Georgia Tech, the National Museum in Warsaw, NGV, QAGOMA, AGNSW, and conservation framers from around the world. The program explored frame history, conservation ethics, and the science underpinning contemporary conservation practice — including condition assessments, material behaviour, preventive care, and considered, sustainable approaches to treatment. We also visited the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and were warmly welcomed at Government House by Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO, and their team. A heartfelt thank you to the Symposium organisers — especially Anita Gowers — and to the local and international speakers and fellow conservation framers for such a generous exchange of knowledge. And thank you to our clients for your patience while we stepped away to deepen our practice. I’m so grateful to @evanh1965 and @lu__steele for attending alongside me; learning together added so much richness to the week. Quietly assertive paintings by emboldened women — paired with framing that’s just as considered. At the turn of the 20th century, portraits of women reading signalled something quietly shifting: a growing belief in women’s right to education and intellectual autonomy — the freedom to pursue careers, creativity, and their own ideas. Just over a century ago — not so distant in the sweep of history. These works spoke to me, a reminder of how fortunate I’ve been to roam widely, to create, and to shape my own path. Of course, growing up in Sydney before I came to Toowoomba, I’m naturally drawn to this work. The Bridge (1930) by Dorrit Black is regarded as Australia’s very first cubist landscape — an oil painting that breaks the harbour into geometric shapes and intersecting planes, capturing the Sydney Harbour Bridge as it was still taking form. I also love the simple, sympathetic frame that accentuates the geometry — a clean white surround that sharpens the composition but never competing. I’m always drawn not just to the art itself, but to its frame — how it becomes inseparable from the work. I love how clearly you can see the craftsmanship in this one … the hand shaping, the hand colouring. I can imagine the scene of its making. A reminder that what surrounds an artwork can deepen the story it tells. Dangerously modern perspectives … Following my wonderful clay immersion week at the @mcgregor_school Summer School, here are some of the heroines from my visit to 'Dangerously Modern' at the @artgalleryofnsw in Sydney yesterday — women whose stories will stay with me long after I stepped away. What impacted me was how the perspective of this scene mirrored the narrative of this beautifully curated exhibition. In the foreground, Eva Benson’s luminous bronze Psyche (c.1919) holds the moment with beauty, grace, and quiet resolve. Behind her stands Hilda Rix Nicholas’s commanding 1926 portrait of Dorothy Richmond — An Australian (Une Australienne) — and beside her, Agnes Goodsir’s Girl with Cigarette (c.1925) offers its subtle nod to modern defiance. As individual artists they were remarkable; collectively they were a force. I love how these works reveal women who pursued their art despite the significant gendered, geographic, and economic constraints of their time — women who chose courage over comfort, conviction over convention. I'd love to share a few more works — and the frames that hold, enhance, and complete them — that made a strong impression on me. I didn’t think it was possible to deepen my admiration for Margaret Preston — and yet her work continues to reveal more than I anticipate. Here you can see her early experimentation with Australian subjects, sharp bold lines, and ceramic techniques, before she became renowned for her iconic abstract woodcuts of local landscapes and native flora. These pieces form part of Dangerously Modern: Australian Women Artists in Europe 1890–1940, which is now showing at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It would be so wonderful if the exhibition eventually made its way to Brisbane 🙏. I love the way art infuses my mornings through the quiet ritual of coffee in my favourite mug—crafted by ceramicist @petaberghofer as part of her Rinse & Repeat series. Peta’s practice often reimagines the everyday, transforming familiar objects into sculptural abstractions. Her hand-built vessels create still life environments that blur the line between domestic and gallery spaces. Heirlooms are rich with stories about our loved ones — the way they lived, what they treasured. ARTSHOP values your stories, and the pieces that help these precious stories be continually retold. This 19th-century mirror, with original convex silvered glass, gold-leafed frame, and original chain, lived on the walls of my paternal grandmother Jean's house. I recall it moving between her sunroom — where my cousins and I played often, running around Jean's indoor plants and baby grand piano — and the spare bedroom right down the other end of her home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The mirror took on such a different feeling in that bedroom, with its dim natural lighting and family portraits. I admired it one time, in conversation with my grandmother Jean, in my early 20s, as I immersed myself in my picture framing craft career. She asked me to look over it and make sure it was in great condition. I did so, and then she would not accept it back — asking me to look after it for my life. Which I have, and I do. Community, craftsmanship, and incredible generosity recently came together in a truly special collaboration when our friends @hogansfamilyjewellers requested ARTSHOP Toowoomba’s expertise to custom frame a delicate illustration that formed part of their extraordinary donation to the 2025 LifeFlight Toowoomba gala: the sublime Nightingale Dress Ring. Undoubtedly inspired by the legacy of Florence Nightingale—and the symmetry between her pioneering spirit and LifeFlight’s brave, lifesaving care, rescue, and recovery in our region—the stunning, one-of-a-kind Nightingale Dress Ring was created by award-winning jeweller Keelie Sander (aka @keelie.skou). Drawing on the gala’s ‘gold’ theme, this true heirloom piece was admired and coveted by the hundreds of ‘balloon pop’ ticket holders who hoped to make it their own. Adding to its beauty, Keelie hand-painted a gouache illustration of the Nightingale Dress Ring, which we honoured with a custom frame using museum-grade techniques: hand-finished, ornate Italian gold leaf moulding, paired with miniature frame edging a black cotton mat window, and TruVue Museum Glass to preserve and protect. Beyond showcasing fine craftsmanship, this collaboration reflects the generosity of our community and its shared commitment to making a meaningful difference.
